Translation by Rana Abdul

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Clashes erupted on Sunday between Syrian regime forces and Asayish, the security wing of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), in Hasakah city under joint control of both sides.

Mahmoud al-Ahmad, an activist, indicated th
at clashes occurred between the border guard forces (al-Hajjana) subordinate to the regime and the Kurdish Asayish militia in Palestine and al-Qamishli streets and the fire brigade roundabout close to the garages in Tell Hajar neighborhood.

The clashes then extended to other points in sites of contact in the city’s neighborhoods. The activist said to Zaman al-Wasl that the fighting erupted following the Asayish militia shooting a member of the regime forces in Palestine street in the middle of the city’s market, for the regime forces to respond by kidnapping an Asayish member.

He clarified that the clashes led to a state of panic for people in the city and the closure of the shops in the market alongside several cars burning, but there is no information at the current time about the extent of the fighters’ losses.

Al-Ahmad pointed out the news about a meeting between leaders of both sides under the presidency of the regime forces’ military governor in Hasakah to solve the dispute.

Media outlets subordinate to the PYD mentioned that the regime air force intelligence and members of the National Defense militia “opened fire towards Asayish points in al-Qamishli and Samara streets, the gymnasium, and the city’s market,” indicating to the continuation of the shooting between the sides. Similar clashes took place between the regime forces and Asayish militia in May 2016 in the middle of Hasakah city as a result of competition between members while guarding the exam centers for the ninth grade official exam (fundamental educational certificate), leading to deaths and wounded on both sides in addition to a number of civilian victims.

The costliest confrontation took place on 20 April 2016 between Asayish militia and the National Defense militia in the middle of Qamishli city north of Hasakah which led to the death of 17 PYD militia members and 20 regime force and National Defense members in addition to 17 civilians who fell victim of these clashes. The clashes ended after 4 days with a true agreement and an exchange of detainees.

Control over the areas and districts of Hasakah is divided between the PYD’s military wings holding the larger areas and the regime forces in the security zones, military equipment, and tens of villages surrounding the cities of Hasakah and Qamishli, whereas ISIS controls the town of Markada in the far south of the province.
