The experience brings back some of the Ramadan intimacy the refugees had missed for the past five years.
Volunteers prepare the Iftar food in the camp during Ramadan in three kitchens inside the camp. The food gets distributed two hours before the Iftar. Then the volunteers prepare the Suhour meals.
Jungle camp situated in Calais on Manche sea is not where Ramadan appearances seem to be, there are many Arab neighborhoods like Dufil mostly Algerian neighborhood. The upper class neighborhood in the capital Paris lack any appearance of Ramadan.
The tourist expert Mohamed Yousef told Zaman al-Wasl the number of Syrian refugees in France is small and they are settled away from Paris and you cannot see them here except for some families who beg in Paris and train stations with travelers unfortunately in Ramadan.
Only few Turkish and Arab restaurants change their routine during Ramadan. They open for Iftar and there are Turkish shops selling juices, sweets and Halal meat, according to Yousef.
Yousef indicated there are no Ramadan banquets in Paris. Some charity organizations offer soup for the ones in need. The big mosque offers an Iftar meal for some refugee families and also the mosques in Paris.
He added there are some Muslim community organizations and funded by individuals and private institutions which offer assistance to refugees in France during Ramadan and after in the big mosque in Paris. There is also a small mosque in circle 18 which offer some assistance for the fasters.
