Solar energy revives agriculture in rebel-held Rastan

Translation by Yusra Ahmed

(Eqtsad)- Life has returned to fields of Rastan in Northern countryside of Homs which was about to turned into desert due to complete discontinuation in electricity by the Syrian government after liberating the area, beside stealing cables and adaptors and selling them in black market, added to lack of water for 4 years due to damage in the water network.

Solar devices started to grow in the Northern countryside of Homs due to high cost of Diesel needed for running machines, which threatens of losing the whole harvest.
Abo Mohammed a farmer from Rastan has bought his solar system at cost of $3500 said to Eqtsad: “despite its high cost, but I do not regret that as it save me the SYP 90 thousand I pay each month for diesel.

Although the Solar energy system is considered the main source of energy amid blockage conditions, however, farmers feel helpless due to the high cost of providing them.

Abo Mohammed explained that he needed to install 16 boards of 250 watt capacity costed him $250. While the cost of the special cables and batteries reached to $600, and the resistance enhancer costed $900.

The trade of solar boards has witnessed big improvement in the countryside of Homs recently, because it is the main alternative for the highly expensive engines operates using diesel according to the engineer and farmer Abo Khalid.“Solar boards are good alternative in recent conditions despite the high cost as the price of one board ranges between $125 and $250 according to quality and capacity”, the engineer added.

Abo Khalid talked about the advantages of using the solar board saying: “the life span of solar boards is long and exceed 15 years if they were used properly, besides the availability of sunshine for free and almost all the time.”

However they have disadvantages according to the engineer, especially their high cost amid the difficult conditions people live, and risk of breaking them due to bombing and difficulties in directing them toward sun besides reduction in efficiency due to dust. The Syrian regime keeps depriving people of the essential living needs in an attempt to suppress them, however, the Syrian people keep looking for alternatives to adapt with the difficult conditions to prove that the will of life is much stronger than the regime’s punishment.
