Regime air force endorses Qamishli airport with more warplanes

Translation by Rana Abdul

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Syrian regime has sent more fighter jets to Qamishli airport northeastern Syria from the airports of ad Dumeir and Ash Sha’irat, military sources said.

The source confirmed that the regime airplanes were sent, “as a result of the Russian inaction in executing airstrikes in the eastern area,” and they have been based in Qamishli airport for several days.

The source indicated that the carrier jets Iiyushin II-76 preceded the airplanes’ arrival to transport the technicians and engineers who work on these aircrafts, bring the equipment particular to them, and carry a quantity of air ammunition for the aircrafts to quickly begin their bombing of the eastern area.

The source, an air force office who refused for his name to be disclosed, attributed the moving of the Sukhoi 22 aircrafts and the reinforcement of Qamishli airport to many reasons the most important of which is the regime forces in the Syrian Jazeera demanding aerial support on a daily basis to support what is left of its forces in the countryside of al-Hasakah, the city and Deir Ez Zor and the eastern area generally.

He indicated that Deir Ez Zor airport, the closest to al-Hasakah and its countryside is completely inactive (98%) other than al-Tabqah airport that has been inactive since 2014 and Islamic State taking control of it and the destruction or inaction of most of the 24th Brigade aircrafts based in both airports. The source confirmed that this reason pushed the regime to increase its dependence on al-Qamishli airport.

The source revealed the lack of readiness of the MiG 21 aircrafts based in Deir Ez Zor and Qamishli airports which have lost their ability to fly as a result of their technical expiration and their complete coordination.

The source said that the Russian refusal to undertake aerial reconnaissance in the area is due to that area begin the concern of the American air force and Alliance air force, and aerial operations in that area require greater coordination with the Americans.

Previously, at the end of 2014 the regime moved aircrafts in readiness from Deir Ez Zor airport to al-Qamishli airport because Deir Ez Zor airport became inactive following direct clashes with ISIS that besieged the airport.

The source said it is probable that the platoon will not be able to give the necessary aerial support for the regime forces in Deir Ez Zor and al-Hasakah in light of the steadily deteriorating technical condition of the regime aircrafts.
