Syrian refugees in Europe: family ties weak, fractured

Reporting by Fuad Abdulaziz; Translation by Yusra Ahmed

(Eqtsad)- Syrian women moved to live in Europe have taken advantages of the European law which is very much supportive to women and children especially those who suffer of domestic violence.

Many Syrian women complained against their husbands to police or other bodies to receive protection and support, besides punishing their partners.

Sometimes the European laws support women who claim domestic violence even if they know they were looked fake stories. “when a woman reaches to a point to complain even falsely against her husband to authorities because he knows that complain would be the end for everything between her and her husband, that means she does not love or respect him and she wishes to punish him, what do need more than that to justify supporting a woman? Doesn’t she have the right to choose who would be her partner and share him her bed?”, a female lawyer in France expressed her opinion.

In regard to the man who finds himself convicted of being violent or even sometimes he got punished even without hard evidence, the lawyer explained: “violence against women is not merely physical, it could be verbal, which is sometimes harder than beating, and that what men usually do. European Laws are put by men who know the nature of men and how they can hurt women verbally too much”.

The Lawyer added that a man who pushes his wife to an extent to complain against him even by lying must realise that they should not stay together, and separation is healthier for children, therefore, the government help women to separate and support her for the sake of children, not the women in first place.

There was a report surfaced on the website of a Syrian organisation concerned in the matter of women’s rights, which showed that more than 2000 Syrian women have complained against their husbands for domestic violence in Germany, which pushed men to demonstrate against the German Authorities where 300 men are in prison and some imprisoned for 5 years.

The report that has no source of its information added that even the Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel has personally interfered and asked the authorities to protect Syrian women from their husbands.

Moreover, according to the report, many Islamic religious figures have interfered and requested taking the Islamic sharea rules in consideration when judging the family matters. However, according to the report, Angela Merkel replied that Muslem men came to the country and they know its rules, if they are not happy with law, they can leave.

Despite the question marks about the credibility of the mentioned report, still the domestic violence is widely found among the Syrian families those have gone to Europe recently. However, it was noticed that attempts of exacerbation of those cases were done by the regime to defame and deform the image of Syrian women and families especially who went to Europe escaping from the regime’s crimes.

There was many fake and fabricated reports about Syrian women and families Al Watan newspaper supported by Rami Makhlouf, the cousin of Bashar al-Assad, aimed to defame them.

A religious man from Algeria lives in France, despite he has no idea about the situation of the Syrian families in Europe, talked about problems inside families saying: “families’ disintegration is found among all families, not only Arabic ones, however the matter is magnified when troubles happened in Arabic families because it is correlated to religious and social Arabic traditions that give the man a better position over women.”

The religious man sees that the family disintegration is found in the whole community due to the materialism that affected even the human relationships where mercy have disappeared to be replaced by cruelty and alienation.

Abdul-Hanan, a lawyer lives in France commented in the subject: “the Syrian wife who complains against her husband after less than a year from arriving to Europe is a poor woman because she would put herself her children’s life under hard conditions in a community where both parents are needed for upbringing children properly and away from troubles.”

The Lawyer carried on explaining the violence and tragic situation in Syria has reflected on people’s personal an humanitarian relationships and affected all aspects of life including families which started suffering of relatively new troubles, that has withdrawn attention to them in an attempt to understand what was happening, but not to defame and distort the Syrian families in Europe.

Abdul-Hanan added that one of the solution could be some sort of associations or organisations formed of some old families in Europe to support and help the newly arrived families and explain to them their rights and duties and explain to them the danger of family disintegration and try to mend troubles between partners before reaching to courts and authorities, like what the social associations in the European communities do to their families.

the Lawyer ended advising the Syrian women an men who have newly come to Europe: “if you have troubles between each other, try to sort out your troubles within the family before it reaches to courts because that would result in losing children and the whole family under the law that considers children are in the country to serve the country regardless of the mothers and fathers.”

He added that each woman thinks that European law is supporting her is making a big mistake, because the authorities help the woman to upbringing her children, but when they grow up the authorities would take them away from her if she was not able to look after them and she would stay alone not finding anyone to support her even the women’s right defenders
