Doctors warn of medical crisis in besieged Aleppo

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Doctors working in Aleppo have warned of a medical crisis in the war-ravaged city if the blockade by Bashar al-Assad regime continues as army forces press to cut Castello Road, main route to rebel-held Aleppo.

Abdul Salam Daif, member of Free Doctors Association in Aleppo told Zaman al-Wasl, that the blockade will create problems medically because the medical staff will not be able to reach the city since most of the staff live on the border line with Turkey or inside Turkey.

Daif said cutting the road will stop the transport from inside the city and as a result many patients will be under threat of death or amputation because of lack of specialties inside the city in addition to absence of vascular and neurosurgeons.

There are no doctors specialized in cancer and there are no intensive care rooms in the city. There is also a fuel problem since fuel is used for hospitals and ambulances.

He pointed out there are serum supplies and other medical tools for 6 months, but if the blockade lingered there will be medical catastrophes in addition to medical machinery replacement and maintenance which is a challenge for medical staff inside the city.

Manager of orthopedic surgery field hospital Doctor Muheeb Qadour told Zaman al-Wasl, patients transport from Aleppo city to the hospital have stopped completely since 3 days.

According to Qadour, at least 15 patients from Aleppo city were going to the hospital for medical care and emergencies on daily basis.

The blockade on opposition-controlled areas in Aleppo threatens lives of around 350 thousand civilians living in already difficult humanitarian conditions because of the regime forces systematic daily bombings on their neighborhoods using explosive barrels, vacuum missiles and other lethal weapons.
