Torture Memo: Regime security uses acid as torture tool

Translation by Rana Abdul

(Zaman al-Wasl)- In an afternoon in 2012, Syrian regime arrested a university student in Aleppo at air intelligence checkpoint. The student Hasan al-Wasil was released weeks after a corpse with no features after he was burned with acid as done to many corpses shown in photos leaked by al-Qaysar.

With the outbreak of the Syrian revolution, young man Hasan born in Aleppo countryside in 1988 joined the protests against the Syrian regime. He was responsible for a Skype group to coordinate in Aleppo city as his relative Husam Issa said.

Issa told Zaman al-Wasl, Hasan was studying law in Damascus University. He worked in coordination between neighborhoods in Aleppo and in Aleppo University. He was arrested the first time in al-Jabiriye area in Aleppo August 2011 and he was released later after he paid a lot of money. In April 2012, he was arrested the second time in the university and he was released on bail.

When the armed movement started in nearby areas to Aleppo city, Hasan worked in relief to meet needs of displaced from Homs in Salah al-Din area.

When Free Syrian Army started appearing in Aleppo areas, Hasan his relative said, started supporting some factions depending on his capacity and he would move from one place to another in Aleppo to convince people of FSA entrance to the city. His mission was not complete. He was arrested again in June 2014 inside his car in front of a checkpoint for Air Intelligence near al-Sheikh Saed after regime reported informed about him.

Inside the detention, Hasan was tortured in electric chair and al-Shabeh where he would be hanged for days. He was banned from food for days inside a cell. He was tortured to inform about his colleagues in the revolution activity, the displaced, FSA and protesters in general. He refused to give any information which increased the indignation of his executors who carried out worst torture to Hasan.

Issa indicated that Hasan’s family tried to release him in all possible ways, but regime intelligence did not allow his family to see him or to release him.

He added, on July 7 2012, Air Intelligence branch which arrested Hasan called Hasan’s family and informed them he was executed. They warned them from doing a funeral. They did not deliver his body to his family, but instead told them there are 3 bodies in a cemetery near al-Nairab airport and Hasan’s body is buried there.

Issa continued, after we opened the three graves, we found that one of the bodies was deformed with electric auger. There were big openings in the face and other areas in the body. The second body as Issa confirms was burned with acid. They identified Hasan by a tattoo on his hand because his face, features, and his bones were dissolved by acid as doctor confirmed to his family. The third body was completely skinned.

Human rights advocate sources confirmed that Assad regime uses acid pools to rid of detainee’ bodies who died under torture. The pool is established in basements in al-Mazzeh Military Hospital where the regime rid of bodies by dissolving them in this pool.
