Yousef and Abdul Minaem, twin brothers who died defending Aleppo

Reporting by Faris al-Rifai

(Zaman al-Wasl)- Their young age did not stop them from joining the revolution and fate decreed the twins Yousef and Abdul Minaem Hilal were killed in one hour; one on the front of Bani Zaid in Aleppo and the other on his way to break the siege on the city with his fellow fighters.

The twin from Mare city were born in al-Sakhour neighborhood in Aleppo in 2000. Since they were small, they used to learn the Quran and were good with their parents as their relative Samer Halabi confirms. He added the twin are from a simple family and very committed family. Their father is committed and cultured and graduated from law faculty. The twin was not able to finish their middle school because the regime targeted the school they were studying it despite they were of the best students in school.

Their relative Halabi clarified that Abdul Minaem was second in school in the city of Mare pointing out that their parents opposed them joining the Free Syrian Army FSA because they are still very young. But because they insisted on joining FSA, their parents had to agree since many of their relatives stood with them.

After a period of joining FSA, Yousef and Abdul Minaem moved to join al-Nusra Front because the situation became difficult in Aleppo and because of lack of fighters. They had to go to the fronts after they were deployed in the city. Yousef was injured by a sniper bullet in his shoulder and the injury was light, but he insisted to return to the fronts due to lack of fighters.

When Aleppo siege battle intensified on Castello road and because of the siege imposed on the city population, the rebels fought a strong battle to break the siege due to Kurdish Peoples’ Protection Units YPG attack on one side, and the Syrian regime on the other, so Yousef was seriously injured as he was fighting the Kurdish militia to be die hours later. Abdul Minaem died as he was succoring his brother and got a sniper bullet that eventually killed him.

The irony as Halabi says that “Yousef died not knowing his brother had preceded him to martyrdom.”

Indicating that "their bodies are still where they died because the rebels could not take them because of snipers in the youth residence near Castello road."

There is no accurate data regarding the children recruited in war in Syria because “most factions either opposition or regime hide the real numbers,” according to Campaign Office Manager in Syria revolutionary group activist Saleem Qabani.

He told Zaman al-Wasl that a research was conducted by the group showing the numbers are more than 20000 children mostly between age of 7 and 16 for extremist factions like ISIS, but for the regime, the ages of children recruited are between 14 and 17.
