12 killed in rebel shelling of Aleppo: state media

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Rebel shelling in Syria's battered northern city of Aleppo killed 12 people including a child Wednesday, state media said.

State television announced "12 martyrs including a child and several wounded after terrorists shelled the Salaheddin" district in the city's government-controlled west.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-opposition group, said that 10 civilians including a child had been killed in the rebel shelling.

Since mid-2012, Aleppo has been roughly split between opposition control in the east and government forces in the west.

An AFP correspondent in the city's east said government warplanes pounded rebel-held districts on Wednesday.

The bombardment came as government forces fight rebels and extremists southwest of the battleground city after opposition fighters gained ground there earlier this month, the Observatory said.

There was heavy fighting around the Ramussa area and a nearby military academy on Wednesday, the Britain-based activist group said.

Fighting for Syria's former economic hub has intensified since government troops seized control of the last supply route into rebel-held areas in mid-July.

After a nearly three-week siege, rebels took Ramussa on Aug 6, linking up with opposition-held neighborhoods, in a major blow to fighters loyal to Bashar Assad.

The Army of Conquest – an alliance of rebel, Islamist and extremist forces – then announced an ambitious bid to capture all of Aleppo, which if successful would be the biggest opposition victory yet in Syria's conflict.

Another 400 civilians, including 126 children, have been killed in fighting in Aleppo province, according to the Observatory. The toll includes 126 people killed by rebel shelling of government-held parts of Aleppo city.

On Tuesday, regime killed at least 50 civilians in Aleppo in deadly air strikes rocked most opposition-held areas in the past two days.

More than 60 raids have been conducted since Tuesday, killing 23 people in Tariq al-Bab neighborhood and 20 more people in strike hit their bus near
Ramussa district while 7 others lost their lives in al-Sakhour neighborhood.

Aleppo is now the focal point of the Syrian war. The rebel campaign, spearheaded by ultraconservative factions including the al-Qaida-linked Jaish Fatah al-Sham, formerly known as the Nusra Front, has drawn manpower from Idlib, some 30 kilometers (19 miles) to the west.

At least 97 rebel fighters from Idlib have died in combat in Aleppo since July 31, according to Abdurrahman.

Aleppo is still home to some 2 million people, most of whom live in the government-controlled western districts. Tens of thousands of Syrians displaced from Aleppo have found refuge in Idlib, home to a pre-war population of 1.5 million.

Last Sunday, rebels opened a new front, sending a truck bomb into Aleppo's western Zahraa neighborhood, according to the Twitter account of the Islamic Front, one of the factions fighting for the city. The Observatory reported fighting in the city's western and southern districts.

In different battlefront of Aleppo, rebels have take control of al-Raie town after fierce fighting with the Islamic State, left more than 100 ISIS militants killed, according to activists.

More than 400,000 people have been killed and millions displaced since the beginning of Syria's revolution, which started in 2011 with anti-regime protests. (With AP, AFP)
