Traders monopolize Syrians' essential staples

Many complaints have been raised in the Ministry of social affairs in regard to violation in distributing aid to people in the coastal areas of Syria. The violation reached to an extent of killing Ali Ballan, the manager of public relation in the ministry.

According to the Ministry of Economy and Trade in Syria, some traders started to forger some document to help them in distributing their commodities, especially food like rice and sugar in the black market, as they benefit from the international aid and using forged shipping document for large amount of goods.

40 tons of rice was stopped in Lattakia to discover it was heading toward a destination different from what it was presented in the official documents.

Special sources reported to Zaman Alwasl that forgery intended to change the direction from a city to another to be able to sell the goods to traders according to prices they decide, ignoring the official prices set by the ministry.

Another source from the Ministry of Economy and trade could not tolerate the extent of smuggling and manipulating in refugee’s food said : “transport companies make deals with importers to distribute goods to traders or retail sellers who store and hide them from market to raise prices or distribute them in other cities’ markets where it is difficult to follow and get discovered.

“Regulations to fight corruption in Syria are not enough deterrent to stop traders from doing so, to contrary,  financial penalties encourage them to repeat the offence and pay a small amount of money, which is not comparable to profits they gain from cheating and fraud.” The same source added.
