(Eqtsad)- Om Ahmed, a lady in her fifties from the Western Countryside of Daraa, sells domestic eggs she obtains from about 40 hens she grew in the garden of her house.
“After losing my husband and my son in a an air strike, I have no source of income apart from some charitable organisations, which started to withdraw slowly, then I started my mini project in growing hens to benefit from their eggs and meat to feed my family and cover some basic expenses".
she explained that her project started with fifty chicks, forty survived, and started giving eggs at range of 15 one a day, which she sells at SYP 50 per an egg, and almost gains SYP500 a day, which covers her basic expenses.
Mohammed who started working in poultry farming explained that it is not restricted to domestic chicken as there are many other kinds like brahma, Turkey, Faroni and the wild. He added that the price of two chickens and a rooster of some kinds reaches to SYP150 thousand, while the price of one egg could ranges between SYP800 and 1000 while the grown chicks is sold for SYP25 thousand.
Mohammed mentioned that despite the increase of eggs and fuel prices, the activity in poultry farming is increasing, as there are many electrical eggs hatcheries that produces domestic chicks and gains big profits from that. He explained that many areas were not before the war known of their experience in the field of poultry farming, stating working in it like most villages of Eastern countryside of Daraa.
Obada, a veterinarian confirmed that domestic poultry in liberated areas has
witnessed noticeable interest as it is considered a source of self-sufficiency for some families in the countryside of Daraa, as they are the main source of meat and eggs, besides the profit they receive from selling the domestic eggs, which has become on demand especially after limitation in the the amount of eggs entering the regions.
From his side, Hosam, a agricultural engineer and a former employee in the Agriculture Directorate confirmed that people have started growing domestic chicken to compensate for the severe lack of meat and eggs due to destroying most of chicken farms in the countryside of Daraa as a result of the military operation and siege imposed on the area, added to the increase in the price of essential materials, and leaving the area due to feel of insecurity. All that damaged the poultry farming industry, which was one on the most important industries of Daraa before the war, and Damascus city and countryside, and Sweida were the main markets of eggs and chicken meat produced in Daraa.
The engineer mentioned: “before the war, there were more than 750 poultry farms for meat production in Daraa and 125 farms for laying hens, and 12 farm of mothers of hens, they used to produce millions of eggs and dozens of tonnes of meat, but these amounts decreased and now they are hardly enough to cover the local needs.
