(Eqtsad)- Activists warned of the widespread of viral Hepatitis in the countryside of Daraa due to contamination of water and food.
The Hospital in al-Herak has admitted dozens of cases of Hepatitis last few weeks.
The lab technician Maroof al-Torkmani revealed to Eqtsad that more than 100 cases of hepatitis were admitted to hospital came from al-Herak, al-Lajat and al-Soura, most of them hepatitis A, while 3 cases wer Hepatitis B and one case of Hepatitis C came from Homs.
Hepatitis A according to al-Torkmani, is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus. The virus primarily spreads when an uninfected (and unvaccinated) person eats food or water that is contaminated with the faces of an infected person. The disease is closely associated with unsafe water or food, inadequate sanitation and poor personal hygiene.
The lab technician detailed that Hepatitis A infection does not cause chronic liver disease like Unlike hepatitis B and C, but it might caused acute hepatitis leading to acute liver failure which could lead to death.
The disease can lead to significant economic and social consequences in communities. It can take weeks or months for people o recover from the illness to return to work, school, or daily life.
al-Torkmani advised that using chlorine at concentration of 100ml for a-2000-litre- tank of water could kill infectious agents in water.
Al-Herak hospital finds difficulties in providing laboratory materials to diagnose cases due to high cost and lack of fund due to letting down the area by most of relief agencies.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of the alarming spread of food-born diseases in Syria like Typhoid and Hepatitis-A. The representative of WHO explained that 30 thousands cases of Hepatitis-A were recorded in Syria in 2015, and more one thousand last January. She warned that only 30% of water sources in Syria are still clean, while the rest are contaminated and not safe.
