Syrian women prove themselves in Turkish work market despite challenges

(Eqtsad)- Syrian women have started working in different fields in Turkey due to the need of source of income to cover living costs, or due to breaking the social obstacles used to prevent women from work when they were in Syria.

The housewife talked to Eqtsad in condition of anonymity explained that she was pushed to work in a kitchen for long hours to cover her family’s needs, as her husband has serious medical problem in his eye and cannot work, while the wage of her son is not enough to cover all living expenses.

Eqtsad talked to Ahlam Abdoon, the executive manager of Zenobia association who detailed challenges face working of Syrian women in Turkey: “women feel of insecurity and suffer of low wages, besides lack of laws those protect their rights in their work, added to social background which is considered the most important challenge.”

Abdoon who supervises the project of “my questionnaire” that studies the state of Syrian women in the work market in the city of Gaziantep explained: "working women are forced to spend long hours at work away from her family, which causes educational and social problem to their children.

Abdoon added that a status of worry prevails relatives of Syrian working women, which imposes more pressure on her. “But still, Syrian women are unique in their skills.”

The executive manager explained that Turkish workshops owners prefer Syrian women to perform work at home more than Turkish, because they see them very skilled.

Alyaa Badawi, a teacher explained that Syrian women have been freed of the social restrictions used to prevent her from working in particular jobs like restaurants, brokering, and malls. “it is difficult now to distinguish Syrian woman from the Turkish, especially they managed to learn Turkish language.”

In regard to wages, the teacher detailed that they are too low, but still, that does not prevent us from raising the hat for Syrian women for their struggle to get their rights of work and at work.
