SDF’s first defection: Liwa al-Tahrir fights YPG, refuses fighting FSA in Manbij

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Clashes between Liwa al-Tahrir, one of the components of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Kurdish militias People Protection Units (YPG), the a military arm of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party and the main component of SDF in the village of Qunaitera of the Solok town in the countryside of Northern countryside of Raqqa, resulted in more than 10 deaths of both sides.

In his talk to Zaman Al Wasl, Abo Ali, the military commander of Liwaa al-Tahrir denied the news about arresting the military commander Abdul-Karim al-Obaid known as Abo Mohammed Kafer-Zita, and confirmed that he is fighting at front.
The military commander explained that clashes were erupted because Liwa al-Tahrir rejected participating in fighting against the Free Syrian Army in Manbij, besides the Liwa protested against displacing Arabs from areas controlled by the Kurdish militias.

Abo Ali detailed that heavy clashes started at 5:00 local time Thursday and sill on in the village of Qunaitera , resulted in casualties among the Kurdish units. He mentioned that till now the Free Syrian Army has not support the Liwa yet.

A military source reported to Zaman al-Wasl that clashes were broken out between Liwa al-Tahrir from one side and the military and security wings of PYD Thursday afternoon in the village of Qunaitera that Liwa had withdrawn to due to conflict with PYD, the Kurdish party that formed the main component of SDF, mentioning that 3 fighters from the Liwa and 6 from the Kurdish party were killed.

The commander of Liwa al-Tahrir appeared in a short video record explained that reason of their attitude is that PYD has dominated SDF’s decision and excluding most other formations. “pressure was put on most brigades by YPG, it cut supplies of food and water meant to reach to Liwa al-Sanadid, Liwa Thowar al-Raqqa and Liwa al-Tahrir”.

The commander demanded re-structuring Syrian Democratic Forces under supervision of USA, he gave them two days notice to withdraw from forces in YPG continued to dominate the decision of SDF.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were formed from both the operation rooms of Ras al-Ain and Burkan al-Furat, besides Liwa al-Tahrir, Liwa Thowar al-Raqqa an militias of PYD. SDF have since June 2015 controlled most cities and towns of Northern countryside of al-Raqqa supported with air strikes of US-led alliance.
