Syrian resistance shoots down regime helicopter over Hama, two pilots killed

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian resistance on Friday downed a regime attack helicopter in central Hama province, killing two military pilots, sources said.

The Gazelle helicopters was hit by a U.S.-made TOW missile near Rahabat Khattab base northwest of Hama city.

Source said Colonel Mohamed Hassan Habib and and Major Alaa Dayoub were killed.

Earlier reporters said the military commander of Hama operations and the notorious Colonel Suhail al-Hassan was killed in the TOW attack.

This week, most rebel-areas of Hama province came under heavy air attack as regime forces sought to counter a major rebel attack.

The resistance forces thrust in Hama marks a new challenge to Assad and his allies in a part of Syria where he has tried to consolidate his grip on power against a more than five-year-old revolution.

The attack that began on Tuesday is the biggest coordinated rebel offensive in Hama province since 2014, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group.

Jaish al-Azza backed by rebel groups have captured a number of towns and villages in the attack. The targeted area is populated by Christians and Alawites loyal to the government and is close to the mountain heartland of Assad's Alawite sect.
