(Zaman al-Wasl) Nabil al-Halabi, the director of the Lebanese Institute for Democracy and Human Rights (LIFE), revealed that the al-Assad regime’s ambassador to Beirut Ali Abed al-Karim has started two months ago the immigration process for him and his family to the Hungarian capital of Budapest.
The Lebanese lawyer said in a brief statement to Zaman al-Wasl reporting from special sources inside the regime’s embassy in Beirut that Abed al-Karim has started the immigration process, “because his future residence in Lebanon will not be safe when the political transition begins in Syria.”
In a related context, al-Halabi said he obtained a document from the same source proving the al-Assad regime did not assign an ambassador for him in Beirut when they first opened the Syrian embassy in Lebanon in contradiction to diplomatic norms and customs. Instead the regime, “mandated some from the Syrian military intelligence to act as a cultural attaché in the embassy.”
Al-Halabi continued in a post on his Facebook page publishing the content of the document, “after this person chose the right place to establish the embassy, a charge d’affaires was mandated, Shouki al-Shamout. However, that intelligence personal remained the real source of authority in formations and correspondences even in sending reports about al-Shamout himself.”
Al-Halabi revealed that the security personal is Major Mohammad Ahmad who was promoted twice to become Colonel indicating he was known in the embassy as a cultural attaché, “meaning he was a diplomate and what comes with it from immunities imposed by law and international agreements.”
He added, “Mohammad Ahmad moved to Beirut with a security team of 15 members which outnumbers that sent by major countries to their embassies in enemy countries.” He indicated that, “the most prominent of those intelligence personal was the brother in law of Major General Rustum Ghazaleh called Bashar Talib.” He also said in the post, “Mohammad Ahmad build the embassy from the inside to resemble an intelligence station and operation room within the security quarter of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party in Makdisi street in Hamra. He also formed intelligence ties with several Lebanese parties and the general command of the popular front.”
Al-Halabi mentioned, “after Ali Abed al-Karim was assigned as ambassador to Lebanon, Mohammad Ahmad remained handling fundamental tasks until another security officer was assigned after him Nimer Diab.”
The known Lebanese lawyer, known for his support for the Syrian revolution, presented the most prominent of Mohammad Ahmad’s tasks during his term, “coordinating with militias in Beirut after the coup in 07 May 2008, kidnapping Syrian opposition figures in coordination with persons within the Lebanese security apparatus and moving them into Syrian territory using cars carrying diplomatic plates.”
He clarified that the most prominent of those kidnapped, “the brothers Jasim who one month before the start of the revolution of freedom and dignity, called for Syrians to protest in Beirut demanding a democratic transition in Syria.” In addition to, “kidnapping the Shebli al-Aaismi, opposition and former Syrian deputy president, in cooperation with one of the general command officers in Burj al-Barajna camp and transporting him by car into Syrian territory in 24 May 2011.”
Among the tasks of intelligence officers according to al-Halabi is observing the activities and meetings between Syrian Kurdish opposition activists in Lebanon, and two of them were kidnapped one from Burj al-Barajna area and the other from Shtura.
Ahmad worked to coordinate with Burj al-Barajna municipality to evict Kurdish Syrian youth who used to participate in a weekly protest in front of the embassy from the area.
The Lebanese lawyer pointed out that the aforementioned intelligence officer worked to observe the activities of Lebanese coordination to support the Syrian revolution, follow it members and followers.
Al-Halabi confirmed in conclusion of his post that Ahmad transformed the Syrian embassy building into a detention cell to arrest, investigate and torture Syrians.
