Asayish demolishes Arabs’ houses, turns blind eye to Kurds

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Asayish militias, the security wing of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) have started demolishing houses belong to Arabs Southern Qamishli, under claims of building without permission, while they turned the blind eye to other houses belong to Kurds.

Activist Mahmood al-Ahmed confirmed that bulldozers supervised by Asayish militias had demolished houses for many Arabs in the Halko neighbourhood, that is mixed of both Arabs and Kurds. The activist explained that many people either Arab or Kurds took a chance of chaos in the area and build houses without permission on the public lands, especially displaced people who came from areas like Tal-Hamis.

Al-Ahmed detailed that Kurds residents in the neighbourhood complained against Arabic families claiming they live in illegally built houses, to the municipality of the Self-Administration, which started demolishing houses and displaced people without any compensation.

The activist added that there were many houses and buildings were built without permission, but nothing done to them because their owners are loyalist to PYD. For example a 6-level-building that was built on the land allocated for the sport city, but it was ignored because of its owners.

The municipality of Self-Administration commented on the demolishing process via a statement published on facebook: “the irregularities committee coordinated with the control committee in the municipality and a committee from Asayish have demolished illegal houses and shops because they were built on the government’s lands in halko neighbourhood”.

The statement added that notices were given to houses’ owners to demolish the houses on their own, but they have not done so, therefore, vehicles of the technical section headed by Farhan Kartamini started demolishing house, started Wednesday, September 7, without mentioning anything about the fate of displaced people and possible compensation.

Halko neighbourhood is situated in the far Western South of Qamishli city next to the Airport, occupied by Arabs and Kurds, consists of irregular buildings, controlled by the Democratic Union party since 2012.

The city of Hasaka is controlled by many forces, as the PYD controls the largest area, while the regime controls only the security squares inside the city and dozens villages in Hasaka and Qamishli, while the Islamic state controls Markada town, its last stronghold
