UN urges Kuwait to host Syria aid conference

The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) , Ban Ki- moon urged Kuwait to host the second donors' conference for Syrian humanitarian relief, KUNA news agency reported.

Ban expressed hope "for Kuwait to host the second donors' conference to support the humanitarian situation in Syria", during a telephone conversation Kuwait's emir, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, who is on a private visit to the United States.

Kuwait hosted in January, the first Donor Conference in which participants pledged to donate one thousand 500 million US dollars for Syrian refugees.

The UN call aims to raise three thousand 800 million dollars for Syrian refugees and a thousand 400 million dollars for operations in Syria, engulfed for two years in a civil war, according to KUNA.

The aid is for food, which represents a fifth of the sum, drinking water, medical care and education, as well as the construction of refugee camps.

The UN called last June to raise five thousand 200 million dollars to fund humanitarian operations in Syria and neighboring countries, warning that the number of Syrians who need aid could rise to more than 10 million in late 2013.

Syria's neighboring countries last Monday called for a greater international support to deal with the huge refugee's influx.

In Syria, a total of 6.8 million people are expected to need food aid this year, most of them displaced by the fighting.

Over 115 thousand people have died in the conflict and more than 2.1 million have been forced to flee to neighboring countries, figure that is expected to increase to 3.5 million in late 2013.
