Eastern Aleppo: prices severely hike amid lack of vegetable, poultry

(Eqtsad)- The price of a barrel of diesel exceeded SYP 20,000 in neighbourhoods of Eastern Aleppo, while many kinds of vegetables disappeared as well as the meat, especially chicken, after 27 days of severe siege imposed on Eastern part of Aleppo by the Syrian regime and supporting militias.

Activist Omar Daboul reported to Eqtsad that vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes and cucumber have completely disappeared from the city, but still some kinds such marrow, eggplant, parsley and mint complete are still available but prices have increased more than 6 times.

Daboul mentioned that prices of clothes and children toys have sharply soared due to increase in the price of diesel.

In a relevant content, Samer Qorabi,a member of Liberated Aleppo council told Eqtsad that people had started using wood for cooking and warming water for bath due to lack of gas and other kinds of fuel.

Qorabi added that people started relying on legume they received from former aid, adding that most food available I the Eastern Aleppo is bulgur and soups.

in regard to diesel, Qorabi mentioned that it is not a available, and the council chases people who illegally sell the diesel and seize it, therefore, anyone has small amount of it sell it of kee it to his relatives and close people.

Many activist refused letting aid to enter via Castello Road and went into sit-in and demonstration in neighbourhoods of Eastern Aleppo, describing aid as a “sign of suppression and humiliation”. In the same time the USA accused regime of obstructing delivery of aid to people in need in Aleppo.

In his talk to Eqtsad, a source in the red crescent expressed his worries about the possible humanitarian crisis in Aleppo due to long-term hunger, confirming that the crescent is not going to interfere in distributing aid as quantity and quality are not enough to cover people’s needs.

Mosaab al-Khalaf, a member of the local council mentioned that council had attempted to control prices, however, due to lack of materials, a quick jump took place in prices, where a barrel of diesel jumped to $500, and a kilogram of sugar to $2.

“We have formed the higher committee for agriculture for implementing projects in cooperation with other organisations in some open areas in the city, but due to lack of seeds and fuel, its production stay low”, al-Khalaf added.
