A year after Russian intervention in Syria, Russia promotes using a limited nuclear strike

(Zaman al-Wasl) After the failure of the Kerry-Lavrov special agreement to stop the fighting in Syria, Russia Today channel and other Russian media outlets recently started speaking about the possibility of Moscow using a limited nuclear strike in a bid to explore the potential extent of its effect internationally.

Observers are warning about the possibility of a nuclear attack especially as Russia advertised its possession of the Guided Bomb Unit 28 via the media before using it against civilians in the eastern rebel controlled neighborhoods of Aleppo city.

Internationally, Ashton Carter, the American Secretary of Defense accused Russia of “showcasing its nuclear muscles,” and joining North Korea with “its nuclear and missile provocations”.

In a statement to ABC News at the end of September, he clarified that although the cold war is over, the United States still needs its nuclear armory to “stop a Russian attack or a potential attack by others,” and for them not to image they can “escape American revenge.”

In addition to the United States, the NATO alliance accused Russia of conducting nuclear Cruz missile launch tests, developing pegasus rockets for ground force use, and the possibility of producing pegasus naval missiles.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded that, “Washington’s claims regarding Russian violations of the accords to limit nuclear weaponry do not depend on evidence but conclusions and guesses,” accusing American of misguiding international public opinion.

Kamal Atali, human rights activist and lawyer, did not dismiss Russia using nuclear weapons and in his opinion the United States of America is pushing Russia to do so.

He said to Zaman al-Wasl, “I believe that Russia wants to confirm the regime’s position by any means possible, but it is using killing and tools of destruction gradually to reach the point of subjugation taking advantage of the weakness of the American administration and obtaining a green light from it to do what America hesitates to do, so it leaves it to the rogue state to execute it given their united interests in ending the Syrian revolution regardless of the cost.”

The human rights activist who works in research and studies insisted, “if Russia finds that the regime may lose the battle then it will not hesitate to use any weapon even if it is a limited nuclear weapon and it used a thermobaric bomb in Aleppo’s countryside which are as they say a step before the nuclear. But Russia knows that if it uses nuclear weapons it will have played its final card and it means it has cut off all possible threads to demand a for a political option to the advantage of the regime. If it fails after using this weapon then the battle is over.

This is expected as the regime will not fall alone, but will drag Iran and Russia with it, and the political crisis will not end but the military decisiveness will be to the advantage of the revolution which will gain many supporters.”

Atali who lives in northern Syria considered in his statement to Zaman al-Wasl, “if limited nuclear weapons are used and the results of their use fail… one of the most important results is the possibility of causing the third world war, and there are many countries that do not want to arrive at that result, so they will continues to pressure Russia to reduce the fervor of the Russian bear and not let it arrive at using its final weapon, because it could turn the magic on the magician and the whole world will end up in a uncontrollable whirlpool which will know no end.”

It must be indicated that Russia has over 8,000 nuclear war heads, and 1,800 are in immediate readiness, according to the data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

Atlantic military milieus say that most of the warheads are attached to the strongest Russian ballistic missiles such as Satana and Topol-M which traverse continents. The Russian land forces’ nuclear power is formed of three types of rockets, SS-19 known as stiletto, SS-25 known as Topol, SS-27 known as Topol M, and they number 489 rockets carrying 1788 nuclear warheads in total.

Russia continues to flex its military muscles a year after its intervention in Syria to prevent the regime from falling. Observers see its use of internationally prohibited weapons as happening in a gradual manner to save its ally Bashar al-Assad in light of the international community’s silence about its actions.

Its possession of the right to Veto in the Security Council allows it to violate international conventions special to the United Nations by halting international decisions stopping war crimes against the Syrian people, and it gives it the right to continue its war of extermination in support of the regime based on the excuse of fighting terrorism.
