Only days before al-Adha Eid, the Ministry of Foreign
Trade in Syria, has issued a decision to stop exporting sheep and mountain
goats, in order to tackle the soaring increase in prices of red meat prices.
However, sources in the Ministry of Agriculture,
explained that exporting sheep does not affect meat prices in market, as the
fluctuation in prices is not linked to meat prices at meat retailers and
sellers.
The source suggested that monitoring meat prices in
market and how far sellers and retailers adhere to official prices would be a
more effective way than stopping live sheep export.
Al-Ba’ath
newspaper, the official Syrian regime newspaper, reported that number of sheep
exported till the time of the new decision reached to 200 thousand capita,
according to a study done by the Ministry of Agriculture.
Most people in Syria are unable to offer their minimum
needs of food, especially with the ongoing increase in food prices, as the
price of one kilo of red meat reached to S.P 2000, the amount that most people
cannot afford, after the war has taken all their savings away and left them
with nothing.
