Syrian student devotes himself to help Syrians in Egyptian universities

Reporting by Faris Rifai

(Eqtsad)- Young man Rami Azizi has devoted himself for years to help Syrian students in Egypt in registration and application process and help them through obstacles with infinite enthusiasm and devotion. He devoted himself for the service of his fellow youth to achieve what they want for free.

Rami had arrived in Egypt in 2012 from Aleppo after war forced him to leave. He first arrived in Alexandria. There he felt like the doors were closed for him and that his return to Aleppo is semi impossible so he enrolled in Tusun high school in Alexandria to finish his education.

After he succeeded in high school and acquiring experience in registration process, Rami decided to start a group on Facebook allocated for Syrian high school students in Egypt to help them enroll in universities.

Due to his residency in Alexandria, he had to travel to Cairo every now and then to help Syrian students whom he met there. Rami was able to register more than 60% of Syrian students who are studying in Alexandria University, and 50% in Cairo University, Ayn Shams, and Halwan and other vocational institutes. He helped register almost 500 students in addition to helping more than 3000 in education matters, Rami told Eqtsad.

Rami indicates that his experience in this field has developed slowly and he now has a big network in education and Egyptian universities especially in Alexandria University.

Regarding the nature of help for students, he clarified that his mission is to register Syrian students in universities and to help them in case they are having any problems and also help them get scholarships for new students.

Rami pointed out he helps students by securing appointments for embassy paperwork and facilitate immigration procedures, medical tests, and passports until they finish their registration.

Rami seeks to offer convenient solutions for problems arising in acceptance into universities and he helps students choosing their fields and acquire and modify their certificates issued from countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE to become compatible with the Egyptian system.

Rami’s mission is not limited to registration and application, he also helps students follow up with their course work and inform them of any news in the education ministry.

Rami pointed out to the failure of NGOs to help Syrian students including UNHCR which its work is limited to offering one scholarship every year covering fees, transport, books and small allowance that is not fit with living expenses in Egypt.

Rami said less than 50 students got this scholarship and also the scholarship has tough conditions after enrollment for student to keep it and the student has to pass every year or he/she will lose the scholarship as one student told him.

According to Rami, Syrian students suffer from many obstacles like residency problem. Before a student would register in primary school until high school in state schools and gets yearly residence permit, but now registration in any educational level requires residency which forces student’s parents to seek brokers and pay large sum of money to get residencies and sometimes they give them fake residencies which cause them additional problems.
