(Eqtsad)- Many cases of food poisoning have been seen in Qaboun neighbourhood Eastern of Damascus, many of them needed treatment in hospital.
Abo Hassan told Eqtsad that he bought pieces of ice to use them in cooling drinking water, however, the very next day he with his family suffered of vomiting and diarrhoea and needed to go to hospital.
When searching for the cause behind the food poisoning condition they have had, it was discovered that the ice factory used untreated well water, which was contaminated, and when they mixed ice cubic with water the germs spread in it and infected them.
Moreover, Kaboun neighbourhood suffers of drinking water contamination with sewage due to frequent bombing that causes destruction of water pipes and network, which allows contaminated water to mix with drinking water.
Moreover, drinking water was spoiled with sand and mud even with diesel which caused death of three children and more than 100 cases of food poisoning.
Abo Qusay, responsible for health in the neighbourhood told Eqtsad that they had collected a sample of drinking water from several lines of water network and examined them to discover that one line was contaminated with sewage and caused 100 cases of poisoning before fixing it.
Dr. Nizar, responsible for al-Hayat Surgical Hopspital reported that many case of food poisoning were admitted to hospital, most of them were children. They suffered of vomiting, diarrhoea and fever with fatigue, they needed treatment with antibiotics and some cases needed intravenous fluid replacement.
Other cases of infection resulted from the collection of rubbish around the neighbourhood and dumping significant amount of it in Yazid river, the main branch of Barada river that supply the Eastern part of Damascus, which resulted in bad smell of the river, and regime’s municipality found no alternative but to cover it, which prevented rain from reaching to it and increased contamination.
The hospital of al-Razi published a leaflet on its Facebook page advising of steps to clean drinking water by clean it from mud first by purifying it through a piece of fabric, then boiling it and let it cool down without covering it. The hospital advised of going to hospital when suffering of vomiting, diarrhoea, fever or abdominal pain
