(Eqtsad)- Despite the hike of money transfer fees from Gaziantep to the besieged Eastern Aleppo neighborhoods have soared, Abo Ahmed, merchant, find himself obliged to pay $1200 fees for transferring $10,000, aiming they would reach to recipients.
“This exchange office is charging less than others, as usually they demand 20% of the amount need to be transferred, I have to pay the fees because there is no other way to transfer money”, Abo Ahmed told Eqtsad.
In a tour around Gaziantep and Kilis to have an Idea about the money transfer to Aleppo fees, Eqtsad met Hussein, an Exchange dealer who explained that fees for transferring money to Aleppo has ranged between 15% to 20% of the transferred amount these days, while it was 1% before siege.
Hussein blamed the regime and supporting militias for preventing money from reaching inside Aleppo, which forced money exchange offices to increase their fees.
An owner of exchange office in Gaziantep agreed with Hussein in regard to the increase of money transfer fees to Aleppo, confessing that they hold responsibility for that increase but he thinks that offices inside Aleppo hold greater responsibility.
In regard to the mechanism of transferring money inside Aleppo, he explained: “we give money to a third party office here in Turkey identified by the office in Aleppo, then the office in Aleppo give the money to recipient in Aleppo.”
Most organizations face difficulties in transferring money inside Aleppo to their employees inside Aleppo according to a financial manager of a civil organization who talked to Eqtsad on condition of anonymity. He explained: “money transfer fees is too high, I had hard discussion with the administration because they hinted that they would hold employees part of the transfer fees from their salaries.”
