UN's food rations to Zabadani contained inedible rice: local council

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Zabadani's local council west of  Damascus, in statement, said the most recent batch of United Nations food rations delivered to residents remaining in the town contained rice “unsuitable for human or animal consumption.”

The assistance was delivered on 25 September 2016. The council said that after opening the bags of rice, it appeared that they contained pieces of glass in different sizes other than finding bird dung remains in some bags. The council informed the manager of the de Mistura political office of the issue, and she sent persons to take samples of the rice but the Hezbollah militia besieging the city prevented them from entering to take the samples.

The council confirmed that 65% of the rice delivered is unsuitable for consumption indicating the besieged residents need this necessary nutrition and the council called for an alternative quantity to be delivered to substitute the damaged quantity. The total quantity of weight delivered reaches 2 tons distributed in 200 bags where each bag weighs 10 kilometers.

The council’s complaint is not the first of its kind, as prior similar complaints were made in different areas where food products unsuitable for consumption were distributed. The food products were inedible due to their expiration or they were sabotaged without it being clear in many cases who tampered with them.

The question remains if this situation is the result of corruption within the United Nations bodies overseeing the distribution of assistance or an act of sabotage by the regime forces and its militias which search these trucks under the premise they contain weapons or ammunition.
