Northern Homs: 4000 Syrians with disabilities, including 500 children, find no support

(Zaman Al Wasl)- New statistics by local relief organizations showed that almost 4000 people with disabilities, including 500 children and 700 amputation, are living in the besieged northern countryside of Homs city.

Abo Mohsen, a father of a disabled young man, said that he had become unable to cover the expenses of his son’s treatments and needs after he became paralyzed due to injuries by shells near his house.

The father added:”my son need SYP. 50,000 monthly for treatment and food, he needs a sensitive operation, many relief organisations in Turkey sponsored covering his treatment, but the siege prevented us for the opportunity, he is at risk of being amputated if doctors in besieged countryside of Homs did not find suitable treatment”.

Abo Mohsen confirmed that debts have been accumulated on me reaching to a million Syrian pound, while the relief organisations have not provided not with more than 10% of expenses.

In a relevant content, Dr. Abdullah, an Orthopaedist from Homs attributed the increase in number of amputations to infection and bleeding beside the period before reaching to hospital as the longer the period the more difficult to save the limb. Added to the lack of medical staff and pressure on field hospitals and lack of specialised equipments.

The doctor appealed to charitable people to support them to establish a centre of prostheses in Homs countryside like the one in Daraa and Douma.

Khalid told Zaman al-Wasl his long journey between Homs countryside and Turkish hospitals to have a smart prostheses fixed to his right lower limb after it was amputated by a mine.

Khalid detailed that he with other young men with amputation and other injuries started their journey toward Northern Syrian, they were about to be killed many times.

“Then in Turkey I started looking for an opportunity to have smart limb fixed, after 6 month a relief organisation sponsored my case and I have a smart prostheses fixed at a cost of $.10, 000 paid by the organisation".

Khalid considered himself lucky to have that chance, and feels sorry for his friends who are under siege in Homs countryside, don’t have a chance for a smart or oven for an ordinary prostheses.
