Seeking Shelter After Fleeing Mosul

The battle for Mosul, Iraq, raged on Friday and streams of civilians continued an exodus from the city.

After punching into the city on Tuesday, Iraqi forces paused briefly. They moved deeper into the eastern districts of the city but encountered fierce resistance from Islamic State militants. Top, an oil well burned Friday in Qayyara, near Mosul, after being set alight by retreating Islamic State fighters.

As the military offensive continued, a United Nations-sponsored campaign opened a new camp for displaced people east of Mosul to help some 25,000 civilians who have fled the city and its outskirts.

The new camp, in Hasan Sham, received about 3,000 people almost immediately, the United Nations said in a statement. Bottom right, a girl on the move Friday on the eastern edge of Mosul.

Thousands of others who fled the clashes have taken shelter in a camp in Al Khazar, also east of Mosul. Bottom left, relatives were reunited Friday at a fence surrounding the camp.
