Living conditions deteriorate sharply in Hasaka: residents


(Zaman Al Wasl)- Ahmed al-Darbo, 38-year-old, is preparing himself with 7 members of his family to leave Qamishli, Northern of Hasaka to Turkey, via a long illegal route at a cost of $2000, amid unprecedented soaring of food prices.

"Moreover, we still suffer of the sugar crisis in towns and villages of Hasaka province, added to unemployment, amid uncertainty and dividing control of the city by many forces, Syrian regime, Islamic State and Kurdish Democratic Union party”.

All that have hardened people’s lives forcing them to leave the city hoping to find better area in Turkey and Northern of Iraq and Lebanon.

Ahmed who works on a motorcycle to support his family, told Zaman al-Wasl that his job is no longer can bring him income to cover his children’s needs , as prices have soared hugely, and young men are forced for conscription with influential forces. he added that since traders work in everything, the society had been divided into two part, one very poor and find nothing to eat, and another very rich because of their connection to militias and receiving bribery and trade in illegal materials beside monopolising needed good to raise their prices.


In regard to sugar crisis, Ahmed mentioned that all what is said in media is only words to brighten the PYD's image, but in reality, all amount reaches to the area are given to relatives of PYD’s members and officials, and the rest is sold in black market.

Ahmed added that all people, especially the poor, wish the border to be opened to leave the country, but the they feel that they are in a big prison due to internal and external closure of borders. “I will go to Idlib then to Turkey whatever it costs me”, he ended.

A trader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, has mentioned that Sugar in markets is imported from Europe, Algeria and Lebanon, while Iraqi and Turkish sugar is kept in regime’s stores, due to conflict between the regime and PYD.

The trader detailed that goods are sold in market at high prices due to the need to pay fees on each barrier trucks pass through, all cost are added and the customers and civilians pay the cost by raising high prices.

The trader explained that recent procedure those tend to harden people’s lives aim to either force them to leave the area, or join one of the forces in the area, because all their source of income from working in agriculture and animal breeding have stopped. Even aid is distributed over relatives of members of PYD or Baath party, while deprived people are left with nothing.
