Hannibal Gadhafi stands trial for defaming judiciary

Hannibal Gadhafi, the son of former Libyan president Moammar Gadhafi, stood trial Tuesday on charges of defaming judiciary.

Beirut judge Ghassan Khoury kicked off the court session, four days after Gadhafi was charged by Investigative Judge Zaher Hamadeh with defaming judiciary during questioning.

Gadhafi denied the charges as he was brought to the court.

"Judge Hamadeh provoked me when he described my father [Moammar Gadhafi] as a killer and a criminal before lawyers."

Judge Khoury adjourned the session until Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017.

He summoned lawyers Tarek Hajjar and Adib Boueiz to testify before the court.

Judge Hamadeh issued an arrest warrant last week against Gadhafi, saying the detained son of Libya's late leader had made threats of violence during interrogation over the disappearance of a prominent Lebanese cleric.

Lebanese authorities arrested Gadhafi, a son of Moammar Gadhafi, on Dec. 15, 2015.

Gadhafi was detained as part of an investigation into the 1978 disappearance of Imam Musa Sadr.

Sadr, the founder of Lebanon's Amal movement, went missing along with two of his companions during a visit to Libya in August 1978.

The three were visiting Libya at the invitation of Moammar Gadhafi.
