Political opposition says no ceasefire deal reached with Assad regime

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Well-informed sources in the Syrian opposition's main political body denied news of an imminent ceasefire agreement between regime and rebel factions.

Sources close to Riad Hijab, general coordinator for the High Negotiations Committee (HNC), said no ceasefire draft had been seen by the the political opposition or by rebels.

Key opposition factions held talks in Ankara last Saturday, seeking merger in one armed body and a planned ceasefire that will be able to face the new challenges resulted after Aleppo collapse.

The ongoing discussions under the Turkish umbrella have included the moderate rebel groups as the Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army.

The Istanbul-based Syrian National Coalition and the Riyadh-based High Negotiations Committee were not invited to the meeting.

Sources say Turkey may urge rebels to have their own road-map and to get rid of fractions and discords. Turkey seeks one armed opposition body without Fateh al-Sham, formerly known as Nusra Front, and an immediate ceasefire, over a deal reached with Moscow and Tehran early this week.

On Tuesday, Hijab urged rebel groups to cooperate with "sincere regional efforts" to reach a ceasefire but said it had not been invited to any conference, referring to a meeting in Kazakhstan proposed by Russia.

the general coordinator for HNC said confidence-building measures were needed to create an atmosphere for political transition talks which should be held in Geneva and sponsored by the United Nations.

"We support the shifts in positions of some international powers and the positive, sincere efforts that could represent a starting point for realising the Syrian people's aspirations, by reaching an agreement that brings security and stability," Hijab said in a written statement distributed to the press.
