North West Ambulance Service said at least five people have been injured, with three walking wounded being treated at the scene.
The service said on Twitter that two have been seriously hurt and have been taken to hospital.
Firefighters are using dogs to search the debris for any other victims.
One of the councillors for the area, Cllr John Farrell, said on Twitter that two houses have been "very severely damaged".
GMFRS said crews from from Blackley, Ashton, Central First, Broughton and Chadderton were called to a partially collapsed end terrace at 1.40pm.

"The building is partially collapsed and we are working effectively with partners to determine a cause of the explosion.
"The road the property is on is currently closed and we advise people to avoid the area if possible."
