(Zaman Al Wasl)- Islamic State on Sunday captured Panorama district at the southern gate of Deir Ezzor city in a surprise attack left dozens pf regime troops killed and wounded, activists said.
Activist Ahmed Ramadan said many Afghan fighters who fight in support of Bashar al-Assad have withdrawn from Panorama district toward Euphrates university.
ISIS fighters have also taken many NDF fighters captive, the activist added.
Russia's fighters jets have failed to halt ISIS offensive while the radical group has pounded regime-held areas with more than 200 mortar shells on regime areas this week.
Well-informed sources told Zaman al-Wasl that the regime is sending military equipment and different kinds of ammunition to support the regime and allied forces in Deir Ezz.
IIyushin II-76 aircraft, Antonov An-26 aircraft and Iranian military cargo aircrafts type C-130 will all be used on the route with the aim of transporting large numbers of the members of Hezbollah militia and the other Shiite militia to Qamishli airport.
In recent days, the forces manage to separate Deir Ezzor airport and the 137th Brigade in al-Thardet Mountain from the regime controlled western area of Deir Ezzor city and the village of al-Baghliya and its surroundings.
The regime has also sent several helicopters (Mi-17) to transport fighters to Qamishli airport to transport the auxiliary militia members from al-Qamishli airport to al-Baghliya area in Deir Ez Zor.
Brigadier General Issam Zaher al-Din, Deir Ezzor military commander, asked Damascus an urgent backup to escape collapse.
Meanwhile, residents of regime-held areas have expressed fears of massacres as the Islamic State group continues its advance on the city.
Besieged by ISIS since early 2015, the regime-controlled third of Deir Ezzor city is home to an estimated 100,000 people.
Since nine days, ISIS has steadily advanced in a fresh assault on that part of the city, sparking fears among residents of widespread atrocities.
"Civilians in the city are terrified and anxious, afraid that IS will enter (regime-held parts of) the city since they accuse us of being 'regime thugs'," said Abu Nour, 51.
He spoke by phone from inside the city, roughly one kilometre (less than one mile) from approaching ISIS forces.
Deir Ezzor sits in the oil-rich eastern province of the same name, most of which is controlled by IS.
Abu Nour told AFP that residents were haunted by previous abductions and mass executions carried out by ISIS in the broader province.
"The way they killed them is stuck in people's minds here," he said. (With al-Araby al-Jadeed)
