Syrian opposition not abide by Russia-written constitution: official

Reporting by Abdullah Ghadawi

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Top Syrian opposition figure has disclosed the details of the Astana delegation's meeting with the head of the Russian delegation where rebels refused the Russian-adopted constitution, saying it is not a priority at the meantime.

Dr. Yahya
Al-Aridi said Alexander Lavrentiev presented the opposition with a paper at the start of the meeting which he said is a formulation for a new Syrian constitution, but the opposition disregarded the paper, and it remained on the table to send a message to Lavrentiev that the constitution is not a priority at this stage.

Lavrentiev called on Mohammad Alloush, while al-Aridi was at his side, to review the “constitution paper” and respond to him about it later.

The opposition delegation responded that the priority is the ceasefire and achieving progress on the ground regarding the regime and Iran’s commitment to the truce.

The opposition said that they are aware that the draft for the new constitution was sent from Damascus to Moscow as it was leaked in the last Geneva meeting in February 2016. The opposition members commented that the constitution is a reformulation of the regime’s state structures with Russian blessing ending discussion surrounding the Russian constitution.

Well informed sources told Zaman al-Wasl some of the notable details of the ‘Russian’ constitution including the reduction of the powers of the office of president of the republic, adjusting the parliamentary structure, introducing some adjustments to the judiciary and the powers of the security apparatuses.

The constitution also includes a clear role for the Syrian opposition in the event of a political settlement.

Sources confirmed that the meeting between Lavrentiev and the opposition delegation was marked by its seriousness and noticeable Russian interest.
