FSA seeks new gains in al-Bab, Turkish army says 44 militants "neutralized"

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The heavy clashes have been resumed inside the ISIS-controlled town of al-Bab on Thursday as the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army presses to take new neighborhoods in the last stronghold of the Islamic State in Aleppo province, local reporter said.

On Wednesday, FSA fighters supported by Turkish armed forces seized control of strategically important hills around al-Bab after operations launched overnight.

Operation Euphrates Shield, which involves FSA, was launched last August to secure Turkey’s border with Syria against terrorists and support opposition forces.

Since November, the operation has focused on taking the town of Al-Bab, 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of the Turkish border, from ISIS.

Zaman al-Wasl reporter said more troops have joined FSA in al-Bab to face any retaliation by ISIS.

In its turn, regime forces have taken the village of Deir Qaq, 3 miles (about 9 km) west of al-Bab.

The Turkish military said Thursday that  44 ISIS fighters were "neutralized" over the last 24 hours as part of Turkey’s Operation Euphrates Shield in northern Syria, according to Anadolu agency.

Turkish Armed Forces, who use the word "neutralized" to refer to killed, wounded or captured terrorists, also hit 253 ISIS targets in air and artillery strikes over the same period, the General Staff said in a statement.
