Birth defects in northeastern Syria caused by US depleted uranium: monitor

(Zaman Al Wasl)- National Movement for al-Jazira Sons said that United States admitted using 5000 depleted Uranium in Deir ez-Zor and Hasaka which might explain the notable increase of congenital disorders during the past years.

Dr. Nidal al-Barhou, member of the movement, expressed worry that fetal abnormalities cases which appeared following births in hospitals in Hasaka might be linked to use of Uranium. He pointed out that pregnant mother exposure to depleted Uranium in the first three weeks might lead to a disorder in the making of nerve tube. Deformations like absence of skull and Hematomas Meningitis were among the cases of disorders.

On November 5, 2014, Zaman al-Wasl reported of a medial source following the international intervention against ISIS cases of birth defects that happened in Hasaka hospital which amazed and puzzled doctors. In most cases, the baby would not have a skull or what is known as the frog baby.

Dr. al-Barhou, kidney disease specialist, told Zaman al-Wasl that kids who get exposed to depleted Uranium get deadly cancers more than their peers in the same age group. He confirmed that depleted Uranium gets into all body organs and is considered one of the deadliest toxic chemicals for the kidneys. It also can cause hormonal and behavioral disorders.

Depleted Uranium particles enter human body through breathing, swelling or touching. It can accumulate in kidneys, brain, and other body organs causing genetic change leading to genetic mutation that appear later as functional and birth related disorders.

The doctor added that during his work at blood diseases and cancers department at Damascus Hospital during 2007, he noticed a spread of blood cancer among the Iraqi refugees in Syria as a result of the war. There is no cancer treatment center in the north of Syria, and that’s why people are forced to go to Damascus for treatment.

Experts say that depleted Uranium remains in bombed dry regions in the form of dust and when rain falls it goes to the ground. Planting this toxic soil and consumption of toxic water and nutrition might be a risk for the population health and especially children.

Women have higher risk than men to get affected by depleted Uranium.
It is worth mentioning that American army used depleted Uranium in the Gulf War 1991 and in Balkan 1995 and in Afghanistan 2011.
