Syrian Peshmerga Kill and Injure PKK Fighters at Iraqi border


(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian Peshmerga killed and injured several fighters from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) while defending a Peshmerga location from the PKK forces’ attack at the Syrian-Iraqi border region on Friday,
commander said.

Lieutenant Saadoun Sino said the PKK fighters fled leaving several military vehicles behind them. Some of the fighters handed themselves over to the Syrian Peshmerga since four of the fighters were injured during the clashes.

Speaking to Zaman al-Wasl, Lieutenant Sino said the attack came after tension between them and the PKK forces present in Sanjar in Iraq. The tension developed after part of the Syrian Peshmerga forces headed to the Iraqi area of Snuny that borders Syrian al-Hasakah.

According to Lieutenant Sino, the Syrian Peshmerga moved to the border region with Syria as a preliminary step to entering the country. He said the PKK fears the Peshmerga forces entering and is trying to push them back into Iraq using any means.

The Syrian Peshmerga forces have been posted in Iraq along the Syrian border for a year. After it recently finished fighting against the Islamic State forces in Iraq, all the remaining Peshmerga forces moved to Snuny.

The media outlets subordinate to the PKK and its Syrian branch the Democratic Union announced the Syrian Peshmerga attacked PKK locations in the area surrounding Khan Sour in Sanjar province in Iraq which the forces have held since the Islamic State forces withdrew from those areas at the end of 2014.

The Kurdish Rudaw network mentioned that Syrian Peshmerga forces numbering 500 fighters stationed on Thursday evening between the towns of Khan Sour and Snuny inside Iraq close to the border between Iraqi Sanjar and the Syria are of Tel Hamis. The media outlet indicated that the forces subordinate to the PKK in Sanjar area asked the Peshmerga forces to withdrew from the area, but the Peshmerga forces remain in their locations.

The Syrian Peshmerga, also known as Rojava Peshmerga, is formed of Syrian Kurdish youths who fled from the Syrian army or mandatory military service announced by the Democratic Union’s Autonomous Administration in Syria. The forces received training at the hands of military experts in Iraqi Kurdistan and were adopted as the military wing of the Kurdish National Council.
