Qamishli: PYD supporters rampage through rally of rival group


(Zaman Al Wasl)- Revolutionary Youth, a group subordinate to the Democratic Union Party, has attacked supporters of the Kurdish National Council during their events organized al-Qamishli city commemorating the events of 12 March 2004, first Kurdish uprising against the Syrian regime.

An official in the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Party told Zaman al-Wasl that members of the Revolutionary Youth had attacked a gathering of residents in al-Qamishli city who were commemorating the events of 12 March 2004 which took place in the town stadium, and which is known locally as the March 12 Intifada. He added that Democratic Union fighters surrounded the Kurdish National Party and the Kurdish Democratic Party offices in al-Malikiyah city.

Activist Mahmoud al-Ahmad confirmed that Revolutionary Youth groups, subordinate to the Democratic Union Party attacked a gathering commemorating the clashes that erupted in the town stadium between the supporters of al-Fatouweh and al-Jihad teams in 2004. The Revolutionary Youth groups prevented them from reaching the Qadouri Bey cemetery.

In commemoration of the March 12 Intifada, all of the commercial shops in the markets of the cities and towns of the northern countryside including al-Qamishli city closed. Al-Ahmad added that Kurdish residents lined the streets of different cities and towns in the province. They stopped traffic to stand for a moment of silence at 11:00 am local time in the cities of al-Qamishli, Amuda, Ras al-Ayn, al-Qahtaniya, al-Jawadiyah, al-Hasakah, al-Malikiyah among others. Residents also placed lit candles on their house roofs and balconies that night.

Supporters of the Democratic Union Party organized celebrations, visited the Qadouri Bey cemetery, and issued statements on the occasion of the March 12 Intifada. It is considered a national holiday in all the directorates under the Autonomous Administration.

On that day in 2004, regime forces killed around 40 Kurds and injured around 500 people in addition to arresting thousands during demonstrations that erupted following clashes between the supporters of the al-Fatouweh team from Deir Ez Zor and the al-Jihad team supporters from al-Qamishli.
