(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Syrian regime has resumed its military operations in T4 airport in Syria derert after breaking ISIS two-month siege, sources said Monday.
Su-24 and Su-22 warplanes have returned to service in the military airport near Palmyra after breaking the siege enforced by the Islamic State since December 12, last year till the end of February.
The besiege restricted the usage of the airport by the Syrian regime forces due to frequent shelling at the runaways and other buildings, which forced the regime to transfer warplanes from the T4 airport to Sheerat airport, 40 km away from T4 airport, near the city of Palmyra.
Sources confirmed that ordnance and airplanes would not return as usual to T4 airport, as a decision to keep part of air forces equipment at the brigade 70 in Sheerat airport, to be managed by Major General Malik Hasan, leader of the Avian troop 22.
The T4 Airport is essential for the Syrian regime and is the most important military airport, it provide the regime forces with close air support. The main maintenance centre for Sukhoi warplanes is located in T4 airport only . It has an area of 50 km2 and two runways of 3100 meters length an 60 meters with, added to a path for planes along the runaway of 20 meters width.
The airport has 54 reinforced concrete sheds to protect warplanes, guarded heavily by special forces and republican guards. There are many stores for plane fuels.
In addition, there are 3 yards for planes to park on the eastern side of the airport, the first and second are connected to each other at north at the top of the runway. The eastern yard has an area of 680mX70m, the second of 440m X100, while the third has a length of 300 meters and width of 100 meters. All that enables the airport the host more of five air squadrons or more than 150 aircrafts in the same time.
T4 military airport had before the revolution been the base for Brigade 70, which consists of two squadrons: Squadron 19 of Sukhoi 24 and Squadron 827 of Sukhoi 22 m 4. Many aircraft of the Avian college and helicopters are based in the airport for the last four years.
