(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian Democratic Forces clashed Wednesday with ISIS near al-Safsafa village near Tabqa airbase as the US-backed militia pressed major gains in Raqqa province, local activist said.
Activist Muhab Naser said the fight is still ongoing near the Euphrates Dam amid fears of imminent collapse of the country's largest dam and tragic disaster.
SDF said it had killed 16 ISIS militants in al-Safsaf village. ISIS, in return, said it had killed 8 SDF fighters near Tabqa airport.
Last week, SDF repelled a major counter-attack by ISIS militants holding out at Euphrates dam.
The dam is a key strategic target in the military campaign to isolate and capture the city of Raqqa, 40 km (25 miles) to the east and ISIS' biggest urban stronghold.
The SDF has been waging a multi-phased offensive since November to isolate Raqqa, with backing from the U.S.-led coalition taking territory to the north and east of the province.
