Barzeh residents suffer as local council halts aid

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Local activists in northeastern Damascus district of Barzeh  accused the local aid office of practicing a policy of starving the neighborhood’s remaining residents to force them to accept a “reconciliation” with the regime.

,Such a reconciliation would involve the neighborhood’s remaining residents leaving the neighborhood and going to northern Syria as has happened in several other neighborhoods across Damascus and Syria.

Speaking to Zaman al-Wasl, sources supported their accusations with recently taken footage and pictures. The images were taken when one of the local factions broke into the Aid Relief Office warehouse. It appeared that about a third the stock was rotten, expired, and left unprotected for rodents and other animals to feast on.

The faction which broke into the warehouse said it handed over the foodstuff that could be consumed to a “civilian body.” Sources confirmed that the civilian body is in fact a local resident known for his kindness and assistance.

Local sources described the difficult situation neighborhood residents are experiencing due to the limited distribution of aid. The local council prefers to store the aid claiming that the stored aid is for emergency situations especially in case of violent clashes with the regime.

It must be noted that the figures mentioned by locals as contributing to their difficult circumstances, are known to most of Barzeh’s residents, to the factions in the area, and perhaps to the Interim Government, which is the highest authority responsible for local councils via the Ministry of Local Administration, Relief and Refugees.

Local sources interpreted residents’ silence about the corruption of these characters, their control of people’s fate and promoting the “reconciliation” as a favor to the regime and its sectarian supports in Barzeh’s vicinity. The sources explained this silence as the result of the deterioration of people’s situations and that their main concern is managing to their day to day affairs. On the other hand, influential persons within the neighborhood are silent as they have a stake and interest in any reconciliation agreement that this conducted.

The sources regretted that relief, which is a lifeline and tool of solidarity, is being used as weapon to pressure people, discourage their morale and make “reconciliation” more palatable. However, the most regrettable thing is that this behavior comes from people associated with the revolution.

In recent days, Barzah witnessed several regime and auxiliary forces attack aimed at gaining control of the neighborhood and emptying it of its residents.
