ISIS killed 104 U.S.-backed fighters in Raqqa: Amaq agency

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Islamic State said it had killed 104 militants fighting under the banner of Syrian Democratic forces less than a day since the radical group lost strategic Tabqa city and Euphrates dam to the US-backed  forces, the group's news agency said Thursday.

56 fighters were killed when ISIS suicide bombers struck their camp near the town of al-Karama in the northeastern Raqqa province, Amaq news agency said.

48 more SDF fighters were killed in ISIS attacks on Tabqa military airfield and in the western countryside, Amaq added.

In its turns, the powerful alliance said they thwarted ISIS attack Om al-Tanak village north of Raqqa.

Meanwhile, the U.S.-led airstrikes killed 14 civilians in al-Hashim area, according to Raqqa Is Being slaughtered Silently, local monitoring group.

On Wednesday, The SDF scored one of their biggest victories against ISIS as controversy intensified over a U.S. decision to arm the alliance's Kurdish component.

Situated on the Euphrates River about 55 kilometers (35 miles) upstream from Raqqa, Tabqa is a key waypost in the operation to capture the extremists' de facto Syrian capital.

Operation Wrath of the Euphrates has seen the SDF capture large swathes of territory north of Raqqa and at their closest point its fighters are just eight kilometers (five miles) from the city.

They are now working to tighten the noose before a final assault.

The offensive has been supported by bombing raids by a U.S.-led coalition, as well as coalition military advisers on the ground.
