Jordan’s Labor Ministry to close Amman-based Syrian Channel

Representatives from the Ministry of Labor and Social Affair in Amman have met journalists working in Syria al-Shaab Satellite Channel to inform them of shutting down the channel, besides forcing them to write a pledge to stop working.

Many other channels, Syrian or Iraqi were closed before, especially those which did not have a permission. They were requested to get a one, However it is well known that it is very difficult to get permission, according to well informed sources.

On the other hand, many sources circulated news that the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs intends to look at legal situations for 160 thousands Syrian workers in Jordan.

Sources added that around 2200 Syrian workers were caught for working illegally, without permission, as a part of the mention new campaign, especially in Amman and the Northern Provinces close to Syria.

“that campaign came as a response for many requests from Local organization or Labor councils to control  the Syrian Workers flow into the Labor market in Jordan, which affects the local workers and their chances to get a job, because Syrian workers accept lower wages and they are experienced”. Sources explained.

The surprise was that campaign has set wages for Syrian workers similar to those of workers from other Nationalities, according to some Syrian workers. They expected that campaign aims to satisfy the Local workers and Labor Councils from one hand, and force the International community to take more care of Syrian refugees from the other hand. They mentioned that campaign has not resulted so far in deporting any Syrian, all what illegal workers have to do was to write a pledge to not work illegally again, and they will be sent to al-Zatari camp if they break the pledge.

It must be admitted that Syrian workers receive special treatment, as they are charged lower fees to get a work permission, which is known to be expensive. However, it is almost impossible for Syrians to get a permission to work in some Jobs like a Journalist.

Syrian workers’ wages do not exceed JD 250, according to sources.
