The Iranian armed group Jeish al-Adl (Army of Justice)
issued on Tuesday a statement claiming responsibility for attacking an Iranian
military base near the southern city of Saravan.
The statement said that dozens of Iranian Revolutionary Guards were killed and several others were wounded during the attack that took place on Monday.
Three brigades of Jeish al-Adl, comprising 92 fighters, took part in the attack which involved a siege on an army base that lasted for two hours, according to the statement.
The base was described as the biggest Iranian military base at the border area between Iran and Pakistan.
The attack was in retaliation for the execution of 16 inmates in Zahedan prison, accused by authorities as “rebels,” the statement said.
The executions followed the killing in October of 14 Iranian border guards in Sistan-Baluchestan province, Jeish al-Adl spokesman, Abdul Rauf Regi, told Al Arabiya Net.
