At least 7 detainees have been killed and 10 others have been
wounded Monday in the embattled Aleppo Central Prison by forces loyal to Bashar
al-Assad, activists reported.
The intense battles, taking place in close vicinity to
the prison and within its outskirts, continue to prevent Red Crescent workers
from delivering food and medical support to the prisoners, the thing that
contributed the deteriorating living conditions and resulted in the spread of
diseases among the inmates, according to Syria Newsdesk website.
Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub and most populous city
before the uprising against Assad erupted in 2011, has been witnessing heavy
fighting since Assad's forces, backed by Shi'ite militia from Iraq and the
Lebanese party Hezbollah, launched an offensive two weeks ago to retake
rebel-held areas in the city.
Aleppo-based civil activists reported on Sunday, that
the Syrian Arab Red Crescent managed to reach an agreement with the Syrian
regime, allowing six of the inmates, currently imprisoned in Aleppo's Central
Prison, to be evacuated due to their decreased humanitarian situation, Syria
Newsdesk reported.
Over the
past few days, a number of prisoners have reportedly died due to malnutrition,
while prison security men buried the diseased inmates in the prison's
courtyard. According to activists, a significant portion of food supplies
provided for the prisoners by the Red Crescent, are regularly confiscated by
the guards and members of the Syrian army.
