Syrian police to storm Homs Prison as inmates revolt against arbitrary sentences

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian police are mobilizing forces to storm the central prison of Homs as more than 500 prisoners continue their revolt for the second week against jail sentences issued for 50 detainees by the Terrorism Court, according to footage leaked by prisoners on Monday.

For over 12 days, the prisoners have been left without food, water and electricity, according to footage surfaced by Syrian activists on the social media.

The inmates have also complained of prison guards and a lack of food and medicines, demanding their basic rights, including fair trial.

The prisoners being held in Homs, in central Syria, include prisoners of conscience who were jailed for taking part in anti-regime protests, according to AFP.

Some of them were sentenced to 30 years for participation in peaceful demonstrations, the detainees say.

Al-Dorars news site reported early October that the new director of the prison, who was appointed in mid September, Bilal Suleiman Mahmoud, vowed to break into the prison after the Terrorism Court judges visited the prison and sentenced 50 detainees to six years in prison, which was rejected by the detainees.

The sources added that the prisoners have been alerted since yesterday and sent a letter to the negotiating delegation to pressure the Russians to stop the threat or intrusion in the event that happened.

The regime suspended the transfer to the judiciary two years ago and prevented the release of any prisoner except through a "settlement" with the regime, al-Doraras said.

International rights groups say thousands of detainees are held in Syrian government prisons without charge and many of them are subjected to torture, a claim denied by the authorities.

The Syrian conflict began in 2011 with popular protests against Bashar al-Assad and spiraled into civil war claimed lives of more than half million people after a crackdown by security forces.
