Most
victims are civilians, including scores of women and children, were killed by
200 barrel bombs dropped from Assad helicopters, the Commission said in a statement posted online.
500 families are displaced now, the statement adds.
Barrel
bombs are explosive-filled cylinders or oil drums that are often rolled out of
the back of helicopters with little attempt at striking a particular target.
They are capable of causing widespread casualties and significant damage.
Syria's armed uprising began as a series of
peaceful democracy protests 33 months ago but escalated into a full-blown civil
war after Assad's regime launched a brutal crackdown on dissent.
The
conflict is estimated to have killed around 126,000 people and displaced
millions more.
