12 regime fighters killed by ISIS in Homs desert

(Zaman Al Wasl)- At least 12 fighters loyal to Bashar al-Assad were killed on Friday in clashes with ISIS in Homs desert, pro-regime news feeds said.

Two Hezbollah militants were among the casualties of al-Hemeima battles as the regime forces press to capture last ISIS strongholds in eastern Homs in a gas-rich territory.

Fresh clashes were also erupted in al-Rahjan region in the eastern countryside of Hama province between Tahrir al-Sham, former al-Qaeda group, and regime forces.

More than 119,000 pro-regime forces have been killed, including 62,000 army troops, tens of thousands of loyalist militiamen, and 1,556 fighters from Hezbollah, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Russian-backed regime troops and U.S.-backed militia waged parallel but separate offensives against Daesh (ISIS), including in two major cities: Raqqa and Deir al-Zor.

The Britain-based monitoring told AFP it has documented 343,511 deaths in Syria between the eruption of the revolution in mid-March 2011 and the start of this month.

The death toll increased as key international powers step up diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the brutal conflict, and just days before a fresh round of peace talks in Geneva.

Among them are 102,618 civilians, including nearly 19,000 children and 12,000 women.

Another 59,000 fighters from rebel groups, Islamist factions, and the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces were also killed.

Jihadist groups suffered the biggest blow, with the more than 62,200 deaths representing an increase of 4,000 since the Observatory published its last toll in July.
