Prices hike in liberated Syria even with Dollar's rate decline

(Eqtsad)- Despite the decline in the Dollar exchange rate in Syria in general and the liberated areas in particular, people in southern Daraa province continue to complain about the high prices of all materials.

Prices of basic materials such as fuel and other materials controlled by traders continued to rise contrary to what was expected after the start of the drop in the Dollar exchange rate a few days ago.

Derar Hamdan, a resident of rural Daraa considered that the rise in prices of some materials despite the decline in the Dollar is related to traders who want to compensate for their loss at the expense of the consumer.

He added, “for example, the price of diesel was 82000 SP two days ago. The exchange rate of the dollar was 460 SP. Yesterday, when the Dollar dropped to 445 SP, I bought the diesel fuel barrel at 92,000 SP although traders have large quantities and stocks.

According to Hamdan, the prices in the liberated areas of Daraa were not affected by the Dollar dropped rates, but on the contrary continued to increase.

Abu Sham from the eastern countryside of Daraa said, “the decline of Dollar rate will not affect the region's prices. The trader does not want to lose in his goods, and regime checkpoints continue to impose fees on cargo trucks, all of which affect the price of goods despite the Dollar's decline.

All of this reflects on the citizens who have to pay these extras. He pointed out that the price of the Dollar witnessed a significant decline after it had been settled for the price of 520 SP since the start of the decline until today reached about 445 SP.

Despite this, this did not reflect on the prices, adding that the price of a kilo of chicken reached 650 SP a week ago, and began to rise after the Dollar dropped and reached today 900 SP.

On the other hand, Mohammed, store owner, sees that wholesale traders control the price of goods. When asked about prices, why do not they fall as the Dollar falls? He said that the goods were bought when the Dollar was high, not to mention paying fees on regime checkpoints and the high cost of transportation because of the high fuel prices.

In addition, the Dollar is completely unstable. It can change on the black market between overnight and become 500 SP. This forces the trader to buy goods at high prices. In contrast, we cannot sell at low prices. That will make us lose. Mohammed confirmed the wholesalers in Damascus are the ones responsible for the decline in prices or rise of goods.
