Syrian regime seeks reconciliation deal in Eastern Qalamoun

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian regime officials on Wednesday met with the negotiation committee of Ruhaiba seeking to reach a reconciliation deal ending the armed presence in the key town in Eastern Qalamoun region, sources told Zaman al-Wasl.

The meeting took place in the capital, military source told Zaman al-Wasl. Such a step came as regime army and key ally Russia declare victory over ISIS in Syria.

The negotiation committees of Jeroud and Ruhaiba reached in July an incomplete agreement with the regime in the presence of a Russian delegation last July. The agreement stipulated a mutual ceasefire in both cities as well as other neighboring towns for a trial period of two months which is renewable.

In August, the Assad army disturbed Russia’s efforts to sign a de-escalation agreement in Eastern Qalamoun, preventing the the Russian delegation from entering the rebel-held region.

Rebels accused the regime of undermining the deal over its own efforts to reach reconciliation agreement dismantling rebels from their power whereas the de-escalation zone deals show rebels as powerful counterparts to Assad, according to the local activists.
