Deir Ezzor Local Council suspends work in protest on neglected humanitarian crisis

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The local Council in Deir Ezzor suspended its operations on Monday  for 20 days in protest against the continued neglect of the suffering of the displaced people in the province, the opposition-run council said in statement.

The Council said various relief organizations and international bodies have failed to respond to the catastrophic situation in Deir Ezzor because of the fierce ongoing battles.

The suspension was a “final shout out” to draw attention to the suffering of the people in Deir Ezzor province, according to the statement. The council will resign at the end of the specified period if the situation does not change, and humanitarian organizations do not begin performing their roles and implementing their announced projects to help those in need and support the displaced without discrimination.

The Council considered the neglect by Syrian and international civil society organizations working in the humanitarian field as implicit support for the Syrian Democratic Forces and its councils. The Council stressed that it does not have the financial capabilities to fulfil the basic needs of displaced persons and ease their suffering especially with the start of winter.

The Russian forces, the International Coalition forces and their local allies as well as the al-Assad regime and the Iranian militia’s offense against the Islamic State in Deir Ez Zor has resulted in a wave of displaced persons. According to the statement, the displacement is one of the harshest witnessed in the history of the province as around 350,000 people have migrated to Haska, 240,000 have migrated towards Raqqa, and 110,000 towards the Euphrates Shield areas in northern Aleppo.

The Syrian interim government formed the local council in Deir Ezzor in September in conjunction with the start of military campaigns in Deir Ezzor in early September.
